Find Freedom From Glasses and Contacts

Laser Eye Surgery is an option for millions of patients who currently have refractive errors. Glasses and contacts can provide clear vision, but require some upkeep and may be restrictive for some individuals with high-intensity lifestyles. Laser eye surgery can provide long-lasting visual clarity using a short, commonly performed, and typically painless procedure.

If you are considering laser eye surgery, there are a few different types to consider. Each type is slightly different, and different types are better suited to different patients and their needs. It is always best to book an appointment so you can have professional guidance before and after your procedure.

Our optometrists have extensive experience in the pre-and-post-operative care of LASIK, LASEK, PRK, and other eye surgeries. They are here to help you determine if laser eye surgery is a good choice for your needs and lifestyle.

Types of Laser Eye Surgery

There are several types of refractive surgery used to provide vision correction and freedom from glasses or contacts. Everyone’s eyes are different, so different procedures exist to provide the best treatment for every individual based on their unique needs.

When you think of laser eye surgery, the most widely-known type is LASIK. LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis and is the most popular procedure for patients with refractive errors.

LASIK has the quickest recovery time with the least discomfort, with most patients post-op reporting that they enjoy clearer vision as soon as 24 hours later.  It is an excellent choice for sufferers of any refractive error, including myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia.

The Procedure

A laser is used to create a thin flap in the cornea, which is then gently folded out of the way. Then, a second laser reshapes the cornea to correct your refractive error. The flap is then folded back over the cornea, where it attaches itself again and is left to heal.

The entire procedure typically takes between 10 and 15 minutes, and your eyes will be sensitive for a few days following. You should experience reasonably clear vision the next day and be able to complete daily activities.

PRK stands for Photo Refractive Keratectomy and is mainly used to treat patients with thin corneas that suffer from myopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia. PRK was the first type of laser eye surgery and has mostly been replaced with the use of LASIK. However, PRK is still a better choice for some patients.

The Procedure

Similar to LASIK, PRK involves using a laser to remove the outer layer of the cornea. Then, a second laser is used to reshape the cornea to correct your refractive error. After the cornea is reshaped, a bandage contact lens is worn to protect the eye while it heals.

The recovery time is longer for PRK than for LASIK since the outer layer of the cornea needs to regrow, not just heal. PRK patients may also experience more discomfort than LASIK patients.

LASEK stands for Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratomileusis and is similar to PRK and LASIK, and can be used to treat myopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia.

The thin outer layer of the cornea, called the ‘epithelium,’ is pushed off to one side while the cornea is reshaped. After this is done, the epithelium is replaced and acts as a bandage while the reshaped cornea heals underneath.

Recovery time and discomfort levels are similar for both PRK and LASEK.

LASIK, PRK, and LASEK are some of the more popular and well-known refractive surgeries that you can use to regain your vision. However, other procedures such as ASA, Epi-LASEK, LBV, SMILE, and PTK can also be used to correct refractive errors. Your optometrist will help you determine which style of laser eye surgery is best suited to your unique needs.
