As technology progresses, we use digital devices more and more in our daily lives. Whether you work on a computer all day, sketch on a tablet, or spend your free time surfing social networks on your smartphone, your eyes may be negatively affected by the prolonged close focusing and infrequent blinking associated with digital device use.
Digital eye strain can present itself with a myriad of uncomfortable symptoms that may feel similar to other conditions.
If you begin to suffer from watery, gritty, burning eyes, or symptoms mimicking dry eye, you could be suffering from digital eye strain. Additionally, headaches or soreness in the neck and shoulders and trouble focusing after a long period in front of a digital screen can indicate digital eye strain.
The American Optometric Association states that individuals that look at digital screens for more than two hours a day have the most significant risk of developing digital eye strain. The biggest cause of digital eye strain is the fact that you are focusing at one distance for potentially hours on end, which doesn’t give your eyes a chance to rest. However, other factors contribute to the development of the condition.
Factors such as poor lighting or glare, viewing distances that are too far away or too close, poor posture, or untreated vision problems can increase the severity of your digital eye strain symptoms and the risk of developing them.
The best way to avoid digital eye strain is to be aware of your digital device habits, take frequent breaks, and make the necessary changes towards proper and healthy use. Simple things like ensuring proper body position and remembering to take rest breaks can significantly reduce the stress felt on the eyes and body from extended digital device use.
A popular rule to follow is the 20-20-20 rule. Remember every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break by focusing on something 20 feet away.
